When is promposal season?
Promposal season is the stretch of weeks when students ask each other to prom. It isn't fixed, because it simply follows each school's prom date. Since most US high schools hold prom in spring, promposals typically pick up in February, peak in March and early April and trickle into May for schools with late proms.
A few things push the season earlier or later:
- The prom date. A school with prom in mid-April will see promposals in February and March. A school with prom in early June will see them in April and May.
- Junior prom vs senior prom. Where schools have both, junior prom often comes earlier in spring, and senior prom later, closer to graduation.
- Region. As a rough pattern, schools in the South tend to hold prom earlier in spring, while many schools further north lean later. There are plenty of exceptions.
- Tickets. When tickets go on sale, a lot of people suddenly feel the clock ticking. That week often brings a wave of promposals.
Promposal timing month by month
This is how a typical US school year looks. Your school's dates are what count, so treat it as a guide.
| Month | What typically happens |
|---|---|
| August and September | School starts, homecoming is announced. Homecoming proposals begin. |
| October | Many homecoming dances take place. By the end of the month, hoco season is over at most schools. |
| January | Many schools announce the prom date and theme. Good time to start paying attention. |
| February | Early promposals, mainly for April proms. Some people tie it to Valentine's Day. |
| March | The busiest promposal month at many schools. Tickets often go on sale around now. |
| April | Still busy, especially for May proms. Early proms happen this month. |
| May and early June | Last promposals for late proms, then prom itself and graduation. |
Tip: Ask a friend in the year above when people asked last year. Every school has its own rhythm, and they'll know it.
How far in advance to ask someone to prom
Three to six weeks before prom is the sweet spot for most people. Here's why:
- Enough time to plan: tickets, outfits, maybe matching colors, a corsage or boutonniere, dinner and a ride.
- Not so early that it feels strange: asking in December for a May prom can feel like a lot, especially with a crush.
- Before plans are set: by the last week, most people know who they're going with and how.
Go a little earlier if your friend group is booking a dinner, a party bus or a photo spot together. Go a little later if you only just met the person. Our promposal ideas include quick ones for the last minute.
Feeling it out before you ask
The best timing is when you already have a good idea of the answer. A casual message can tell you a lot without any pressure:
Random question, are you going to prom this year?
So I've been thinking about prom. Do you already have plans for it?
Should we all go to prom as a group this year? Who's in?
Is there a promposal day?
You'll see “National Promposal Day” mentioned online now and then, sometimes dated in March. It isn't an official holiday, and most schools don't mark it. Some student councils or clubs run their own “promposal day” or spirit day, so check if your school does.
If there's no special day, pick your own. A good promposal day is one where:
- the person isn't stressed (not the morning of a big test or a game),
- you can talk afterwards (not right before they leave for a week),
- you're both at school or can meet easily.
Fridays tend to work well: the mood is lighter and there's a weekend to talk plans.
When to ask someone to homecoming
Homecoming has its own, shorter season. Most US high schools hold homecoming in September or October, usually with a football game and a dance on the same weekend. Homecoming proposals typically happen one to three weeks before the dance.
Because school has only just started, hoco asks are often smaller and more relaxed than promposals. Many people go with friends. For themes that fit the season (pumpkins, football, cocoa at the game), see our homecoming proposal ideas.
Prom season outside the US
- Canada: many high schools hold prom (often tied to graduation) in May or June, so asks come in spring, a little later than in much of the US.
- UK: school proms are common at the end of Year 11 and Year 13, typically in late June or early July after exams. Big promposals are less of a tradition, but they're catching on.
- Australia and New Zealand: the equivalent is usually called a formal, and dates vary by state and school. Ask your school when yours is.
A simple promposal timeline
- When the date is announced: note it, check the ticket sale dates and any guest rules.
- About two months before: casually find out if they're going and with whom.
- A week or two before you ask: plan the promposal (sign, idea, place). Ask a teacher about school rules if you're asking at school.
- Three to six weeks before: ask.
- Right after the yes: sort tickets, talk about who pays for what, outfits, group and ride.
- A week before: confirm times, dinner and photos. Order the corsage or boutonniere if you're doing one.
psst … this makes it easier
Ask your question as a tiny story
- A little story on their phone, with a letter from you

Promposal etiquette: the questions everyone has
Should I ask in public?
Only if you're confident it's a yes and they'd enjoy it. A public ask makes saying no really hard, and that pressure isn't fair. Asking privately and then taking a photo with the sign afterwards gives you the best of both.
Who pays for tickets?
There's no fixed rule anymore. Traditionally the asker often bought the tickets, but many couples split costs or each pay their own, especially when going as friends. Bring it up early and kindly: “I'll grab the tickets, can you cover photos?” is a perfectly normal sentence.
Can I ask someone from another school?
Usually yes, but many schools need a guest form, an age limit or approval in advance. Check the rules before you ask, so your yes doesn't hit a paperwork wall.
What if someone else asks first?
Then it's their answer to give. If you were hoping to go with someone else, you can say so kindly, or say yes if you'd genuinely enjoy going. What's not okay is saying yes and dropping them later.
How do I say no?
Quickly, kindly and privately. Thank them, give a clear answer and skip a long explanation. Our guide on how to turn down a date has wording for exactly this.
That was so sweet, thank you for asking me. I'm going to say no, but I really appreciate it.
Can I ask a friend or a group?
Yes, and lots of people do. Make it obvious it's a friend ask so nobody wonders. For ideas that are meant to make people laugh, try our funny promposal ideas.
Frequently asked questions
When is promposal season?
Promposal season typically runs from February to April in the US, peaking in March and early April. It follows prom, which most high schools hold between April and early June. Schools with early proms see promposals starting sooner.
How far in advance should you ask someone to prom?
About three to six weeks before prom works for most people. That leaves time for tickets, outfits and group plans. Asking months ahead can feel premature, and asking the week before can leave your date scrambling.
Is there a National Promposal Day?
You'll find mentions online of a “National Promposal Day”, sometimes dated in March. It isn't an official holiday and most schools don't mark it. If you like the idea, treat it as a fun excuse to finally ask, not as a deadline.
When should you ask someone to homecoming?
Usually one to three weeks before the homecoming dance, which most schools hold in September or October. Because homecoming comes so soon after school starts, asks tend to be quicker and more casual than promposals.
Is it too late to ask someone to prom?
Usually not, as long as tickets are still on sale. A week before prom is late but not impossible. Ask simply and honestly, and accept that they may already have plans.
Who pays for prom tickets after a promposal?
Traditionally the person who asks often buys the tickets, but there's no fixed rule anymore. Many couples split costs or pay for themselves, especially when going with friends. Talk about it early so nobody is surprised.
How long do you have to answer a promposal?
In person, most people answer on the spot. If you need time, saying “Can I let you know tomorrow?” is fine. Don't leave someone waiting for more than a day or two, since they may want to ask someone else.
