Why draw Secret Santa names online?
The paper version has three classic problems. Someone draws their own name and you start over. Someone's partner draws them and it feels like cheating. And half the group isn't there, so the organizer ends up drawing for them and suddenly knows everything. An online Secret Santa fixes all of that in one go:
- Nobody draws themselves. The generator rules it out from the start.
- Exclusions work. Couples, siblings or roommates won't get each other.
- Everyone can be anywhere. Remote team, family in three cities, friends who only meet at the party itself.
- The organizer can play too. No one has to be the person who knows all the matches.

Using the Secret Santa generator, step by step
Here's exactly what happens in our free Secret Santa generator. Plan about two minutes, a little longer if you have many exclusions.
- Name your group. Something like "Office Secret Santa" or "Cousins 2026". It shows up on everyone's link, so people know which exchange it is.
- Add budget and date (optional). "$25" and "Friday, December 18" appear on each person's result, so nobody has to scroll back through the group chat to find them.
- Enter the names. Type a name and press Enter, or paste a whole list from your chat. One line becomes one person. You need at least 3 and can add up to 50.
- Decide if you're in. If you're taking part yourself, switch that on. You'll get your own link like everyone else.
- Set exclusions. Tap two names that shouldn't draw each other. By default it works both ways, one more tap makes it one way only (handy if Mom shouldn't draw Grandma, but Grandma may draw Mom).
- Add a note for everyone (optional). "Wrap it nicely, exchange after dinner" or "Please add three hints to the chat by Sunday".
- Draw. One tap and everyone is matched. The draw happens on your device.
- Send the links. You see a list like "Link for Anna", "Link for Ben". Send each link to the right person in a private message, not in the group chat.
Tip: Send the links one by one in private chats. If you paste them all in the group chat, anyone could tap someone else's link and the secret's gone.

Draw Secret Santa names in two minutes
- Add names and exclude couples if you like
- Everyone gets their own private link by text or WhatsApp
- Free, no sign-up, no email addresses
What your group sees when they open the link
When someone opens their link, a small gift unwraps on their phone and shows the name of the person they're buying for. Underneath they see the budget, the exchange date and your note. If you added a date, they can save it straight to their calendar. That's it: no sign-up screen, no app download, no ads in between.
Because the result lives in the link itself, everyone can open it again later to check the budget or the date. The part of the link after the # is never sent to our server.
Exclusions: keeping couples and families apart
Exclusions are what make an online Secret Santa name draw better than the hat. Some typical setups:
| Situation | What to set |
|---|---|
| Couples in a friend group | Exclude each couple both ways |
| Family with households | Exclude people living together, so gifts go across households |
| Kids and adults mixed | Exclude kids from drawing each other if adults should buy for kids |
| Repeat from last year | Exclude last year's match one way, so nobody gets the same person twice |
| Office with a manager | Usually no exclusions needed, keep the budget low instead |
A warning about too many rules: every exclusion makes the draw tighter. In a group of four where everyone is excluded from two people, there might be no valid draw at all. Our generator tells you when that happens and which rules are the problem, so you can loosen one instead of guessing.
Tips for a smooth Secret Santa name draw
- Collect names first, draw once. Ask in the chat "Who's in? Reply by Wednesday", then draw. Late joiners are the main reason for a redraw.
- Draw three to four weeks before the exchange. Enough time for online orders, not so early that people forget. Send the party invite around the same time (our Christmas party invitation wording has samples).
- Use first names and add a letter if needed. Two Sarahs? "Sarah K." and "Sarah M." saves confusion.
- Ask for hints in the same message. "Here's your link, and please post three things you like in the group chat" turns guesswork into good gifts.
- Keep the draw on your phone. It's saved only on the device you used, so you can resend a lost link later. Clearing your browser data deletes it.
Hi Ben! ๐ Here's your Secret Santa link. Open it to see who you're buying for (and keep it to yourself!).
Budget is around $25, exchange is Friday, Dec 18 after dinner.

What if something goes wrong?
- Someone lost their link. Open the draw again under your saved draws on the same device and resend it.
- Someone dropped out. Ask the person who drew them (privately, through the group) to take over the dropout's giftee. Or redraw and resend all links if it's early.
- Someone joined late. Edit the list and draw again, then send the new links and ask everyone to ignore the old ones.
- You need to pick the exchange date first. If nobody can agree on a day, let everyone tap when they're free in a quick poll.
After the draw: gifts and games
Once everyone knows their person, the next question in the chat is always "What do I get?". Our Secret Santa gift ideas are sorted by budget, from $10 to $30. And if you want something to do at the party besides unwrapping, the gift exchange dice game works great as a second round with small extra gifts.
Frequently asked questions
How does a Secret Santa generator work?
You enter the names of everyone taking part and the generator assigns each person one giftee at random. It makes sure nobody draws themselves and respects any exclusions you set. Each person then gets a private result, in our case as a personal link.
Can I do a Secret Santa name draw without email addresses?
Yes. Our generator creates one link per person and you send those links yourself, by text, WhatsApp or any messenger your group already uses. Nobody has to hand over an email address or create an account.
Can the organizer join the Secret Santa too?
Yes. Turn on the option that you're taking part and you get your own link like everyone else. The results page only shows who each link belongs to, not who they drew, so the surprise stays intact for you as well.
How do I stop couples from drawing each other?
Use exclusions. Tap two names to say they shouldn't draw each other, both ways or only in one direction. If there are so many exclusions that no fair draw is possible, the generator tells you instead of quietly ignoring a rule.
Do I need a Secret Santa app?
Not for our generator. It runs in the browser on any phone or computer, and the links open in the browser too. That's handy for groups where not everyone wants to install something just for one gift.
What if someone loses their Secret Santa link?
The draw is saved on the organizer's device, so you can open it again under your saved draws and resend that person's link. Just make sure you send it to the right person and don't open it yourself.
