Birthday party invitation wording: 50 examples to copy

Good birthday party invitation wording does two jobs: it makes people want to come and it answers every question before anyone has to ask. Below you'll find more than 50 examples to copy, from one-liners for the group chat to milestone invites for an 18th, 21st, 30th, 40th or 50th, kids' parties and grown-up dinners. Plus RSVP lines that actually get replies.

What to write on a birthday invitation

  1. Who and why: whose birthday it is and, if you like, which one ("Maya turns 30").
  2. When and where: day, date, start time (and an end time for kids' parties), full address.
  3. RSVP: a deadline and one clear way to reply, for example "Text Jamie by May 3".
  4. Extras only if they matter: dress code, food, gifts, plus-ones, parking.

Then add one line with personality. That's the part people remember.

What every birthday party invitation needs

Most invitation mistakes aren't about style. They're missing facts: no end time, no address, no RSVP date, so you end up answering the same question twelve times in the group chat. Check your wording against this list before you send it.

DetailExample wordingNeeded?
Whose party"Leo is turning 7!"Always
Date and start time"Saturday, May 10, from 2 pm"Always
End time"until 5 pm"Kids' parties, venues, daytime events
Full address"14 Maple Street, ring twice"Always (a map link is a bonus)
RSVP deadline and how"Text Anna by May 3"Always
Food"Pizza and cake provided" or "Dinner at 7"If people might eat before
Dress code or theme"80s outfits encouraged"Only if there is one
Gifts"No gifts, please"If you have a preference
Plus-ones and kids"Partners welcome" or "Adults only"If there's any doubt

Tip: Write the date with the weekday ("Saturday, May 10"). It's the fastest way to spot a typo before 30 people put the wrong day in their calendar.

Short and simple birthday invitation wording

For a casual get-together, less is more. These fit on a card, in a text or in an online party invitation.

Classic

Low-key

Nothing fancy: pizza, cake and a few friends for my birthday. Sunday, April 6, from 4 pm at mine. Are you in?

Dinner

You're invited to a birthday dinner for Priya. Thursday, September 18, 7:30 pm at Luigi's on Main Street. Table's booked, so please RSVP by September 12.

Cake logic

There will be cake. There will be music. There will be a slightly older version of me. Saturday, May 17, 8 pm at mine. Text me by May 10.

Short and silly

Birthday. Me. Saturday. Snacks. You? ๐ŸŽ‰ (8 pm, my place, tell me by Thursday)

Milestone birthday invitation wording

Round birthdays get a bit more ceremony. These invites usually go out earlier, especially if people travel. If the date isn't fixed yet, start with a save the date and send the full invitation about a month before.

18th birthday

18th, casual

Officially an adult (on paper, at least). Come celebrate Emma's 18th on Saturday, August 9, from 7 pm at our place. RSVP to Emma by August 2.

21st, night out

Twenty-one and ready to order my first legal drink with all of you ๐Ÿธ Friday, March 7, from 9 pm at The Corner Bar. RSVP by March 1 so we can reserve the space.

Kids' birthday invitation wording

Kids' party invitations have to work for the parents who read them. That means an end time, a note on whether parents should stay and any allergy or clothing info. Keep the fun part for the first line.

Birthday invitations for adults

Grown-up parties come in every size. The wording should match the plan: a backyard barbecue sounds different from a dinner with a set menu.

House party

House party for my birthday! Saturday, March 1, from 8 pm until the neighbors complain. Bring a drink you love. 14 Maple Street. Let me know by Wednesday.

Brunch

Birthday brunch, because mimosas taste better with friends. Sunday, April 13, 11 am at Maple & Co. Table for 10 is booked, so please RSVP by April 6.

Bar

Birthday drinks for Nina on Friday, November 7, from 8 pm at The Brass Rail. No plans, no speeches, just come by. A quick thumbs up by Wednesday helps us save enough space.

Game night

My birthday wish: a big table, too many snacks and a game that ends in friendly shouting. Game night at mine on Saturday, January 24, from 7 pm. RSVP by January 20.

Weekend away

For my 35th, I'd love to get away with my favorite people. Cabin weekend, Friday to Sunday sometime in September. Dates and costs to follow once I know who's in. Interested?

For the last two, our guides on game night ideas and planning a group trip help with what comes after the invite.

How to make an online party invitation

For most parties, an online party invitation by text, WhatsApp or email is quicker than cards and gets faster replies. You don't need a design app to make one. A clear message works:

  1. Pick the date first. If you're not sure which Saturday works for your core people, ask them before you invite everyone.
  2. Write the invite as one message with all details, so nobody has to scroll up for the address.
  3. Send it where people actually read: a new group chat for the party, or individual texts if guests don't know each other.
  4. Pin the message in the group and add the RSVP deadline to your own calendar.
  5. Remind once, two days before the RSVP date.
Group chat invite

๐ŸŽ‰ You're invited! I'm turning 30 and celebrating on Saturday, June 21, from 8 pm at The Loft (12 River Street). Drinks and snacks provided, dancing encouraged. Please reply here by June 14 so I know how many to plan for.

Individual text

Hey Chris! I'm doing a small birthday dinner on Friday, April 25, at 7:30 pm at Bella Vista. Would love for you to be there. Can you let me know by the 18th?

Email subject and text

Subject: Birthday party on May 10, you're invited!

Hi everyone, I'm celebrating my birthday on Saturday, May 10, from 7 pm at our place, 14 Maple Street. Expect pizza, music and a cake I didn't bake myself. Please reply by May 3. Can't wait!

Asking for the date first

Thinking of doing something for my birthday in June ๐ŸŽ‚ Which Saturdays work for you? Tap the days you're free here, it takes 30 seconds: [link]

Not sure which day works? Ask before you invite

The most annoying part of party planning happens before the invitation: finding the day when your closest people can come. Instead of a chat thread full of "maybe the 14th?", send one poll link, let everyone tap the days they're free and pick the day with the most yeses. Then send the real invite with the date already locked in. Our guide on finding a date that works for everyone explains the process step by step.

psst โ€ฆ this makes it easier

Find the day that works for everyone

  • Create a poll and drop the link in the group chat
  • Everyone taps the days they're free and the best one shows up instantly
  • Free, no account, no app

Thank you all for coming last night. Best birthday in years and I'm still finding confetti. โค๏ธ

Frequently asked questions

What should a birthday party invitation say?

Say whose birthday it is, when and where the party takes place and how and by when to RSVP. Add details like a dress code, food or a gift note only if guests need them. One personal or funny line on top makes the invite feel like it came from you and not from a template.

How do you word a birthday invitation for adults?

Keep it relaxed and clear: "Join us for drinks to celebrate Sam's 35th on Saturday, June 14, from 8 pm at The Anchor. RSVP by June 7." Adults appreciate knowing whether food is served, whether partners are invited and when it's okay to leave, so mention those if there's any doubt.

How do you politely say no gifts on a birthday invitation?

Short and warm works best: "Your company is the only gift we need" or "No gifts please, just bring your appetite." If you'd like something instead, say it directly, for example a donation to a named charity or a card with a favorite memory.

How far in advance should you send birthday invitations?

Two to four weeks before the party is usual for kids' and casual adult parties. For milestone birthdays, parties with travel or anything during the holidays, send a save the date six to eight weeks ahead and the full invite about a month before.

Can you send a birthday invitation by text or WhatsApp?

Yes, for most parties a text or a message in a group chat is completely fine and gets faster replies than a card. Put the key details in the message itself so people can find them later, and pin it in the group if you can.

How do you word an RSVP so people actually answer?

Give a specific deadline and one easy way to answer: "RSVP by Friday, May 3, with a quick text to Jamie." A reason helps too ("so we can book the table"). A friendly reminder two days before the deadline does the rest.

What do you write on a surprise birthday party invitation?

Say clearly that it's a surprise, give guests an arrival time that's earlier than the guest of honor's, and add a note not to mention it in chats or on social media. Our surprise party guide has full wording examples.
